Koi Ponds

Before you start collecting Koi you need a place for them to live. Building and maintaining a Koi pond to showcase your Koi collection is the way to go.

Koi, like all carp, are very durable, hardy fish. They are not very picky about their environment and can tough out the worst of conditions, although this isn't an excuse to dump your Koi into a shallow mudhole. If you provide your Koi with good care and a good, clean pond you can enjoy them for decades. Properly cared for Koi often live for 30-40 years, and some have been reported to live well over 100 years.

Koi Pond Depth

Koi are cold water fish, so it is suggested to have a minimum of 1 meter of depth if you live in a warm area of the world, or an area that has warm summers. Dig even deeper if your pond will freeze over in the winter so that it will not freeze solid to the bottom, at least 1.5 meters. Generally, deeper is better. Your Koi will appreciate having a deep hole to escape to.

Koi Pond Landscaping

Koi pond landscaping is completely up to your tastes and budget. People add flowers, waterfalls, fountains, docks, benches, etc. The sky is the limit when it comes to aesthetic features, however there are also some functional features you can add. Because of their color, Koi are an easy target for predators. Herons, kingfishers, raccoons, cats, foxes, badgers are just some of the predators after your Koi, and they can easily empty a pond of fish in short order. It is important for your pond to have some deep areas so your Koi can stay out of reach of predators. Overhangs above the water will prevent mammals from reaching in and overhead shade trees to block the view of flying predators.

Winter Freeze

Koi are durable and can survive a winter freeze if your koi pond is deep enough. If your pond will freeze over it should be at least 1.5 meteres deep (4 ½ feet). It is also recommended to use an aerator or horse trough heater to keep a small area open over the winter.

Quarantine New Fish

It is possible to introduce parasites, viral, fungal, and or bacterial infections into your pond when adding new fish to your koi pond. You should always quarantine new fish for 2 to 3 weeks or more before introducing them to your koi pond. You should always treat new fish as if they are infected, you can buy quarantine tanks for this purpose or you can go out and buy a wading pool or large storage bin to use as a quarantine tank. If after several weeks in quarantine your new fish do not show signs of disease, you can introduce them into your koi pond.
